How we Serve
1Hope Ministries Int’l – 2010
WHO ARE WE?
Goal and Objective: To help meet the physical and spiritual needs of the orphan and refugee. “Compassion Taking Action to bring Hope to the Hurting”
Why do we exist? To show the love of Christ to the destitute, namely the orphan and refugee, by caring for immediate needs and to bring them the good news of true hope as we work to rehabilitate and develop them into persons who can fulfill their calling of glorifying God by using the gifts and talents God has given them to provide for themselves and their families with the fruits of that work.
We have a strong conviction of there being 3 specific ways to help a person in need and each one that we meet and get to know will be at a different stage in life and will therefore receive different help and support from 1Hope.
3 WAYS TO HELP ONE IN NEED:
1. Relief
2. Rehabilitation
3. Development
1. RELIEF: the urgent and temporary provision of emergency aid to reduce immediate suffering from a natural or man-made crisis. “stop the bleeding” The key feature of relief is a provider-receiver dynamic in which the provider gives assistance, often material, to the receiver, who is largely incapable of helping himself at that time.
Some ways we offer relief is by providing food, clothing, blankets, school supplies, housing assistance, and school fees for new arriving refugee children.
2. REHABILITATION: begins as soon as the bleeding stops. It seeks to restore people to a positive condition. The key feature of rehabilitation is a dynamic of working with the victims as they also participate in their own recovery.
Some rehabilitation projects we are currently running are relationship building programs. We are in Sunnyside many times a week doing visitation or small group Bible Studies through Living Hope Church. Why? We know that in order to help someone move forward and use the gifts and talents God has given them, we need to know them, visit with them, have the time to ask questions, and pray together. As we get to know an individual we spend time talking about ideas or opportunities for using their gifts to provide for themselves and their families, we talk about steps that need to be taken to get there. For example, further studies, job training, startup costs and materials for business idea etc.
3. DEVELOPMENT: is a process of ongoing change that moves both the “helper” and the “helped” to become more of what God created them to be. In particular the materially poor are better able to fulfill their calling of glorifying God by working and supporting themselves and their families with the fruits of that work. Development is not done to people or for people but with people.
There are several individuals who have moved into this stage and are using the gifts and talents given to them to glorify God and provide for their families. Some are interns in a business or home, others are running their own business. 1Hope gives assistance in the starting up of each endeavor and each situation is reviewed and assisted in different ways. All individuals are in close contact with 1Hope weekly and give weekly updates on progress and new ideas they may have in order to keep moving forward.
Another important way we are involved in Development is by having godly families take in orphans to care for in their home.
4. “A BIT OF JOY” – 1Hope also runs special projects throughout the year – just to bring a “bit of Joy” to all 1Hope beneficiaries.
